Everyone lost the head over a University Challenge student 'misidentifying' an island as Ireland

BUT HE DIDN’T (probably).

MONDAY NIGHTS MEAN University Challenge, and tonight’s episode was unusually controversial for the show.

Edinburgh University met the University of Durham for a first round match – and the Scottish college sent Twitter into a frenzy over a geography question.

During a picture round, the contestants were show the map above and asked:

You will see a map with an island highlighted. Ten points if you can identify the island.

Boyle of the Edinburgh University answered:

Can’t see the video? Click here.

That sounds a lot like ‘Ireland’, doesn’t it?

At least that’s what a sizeable portion of University Challenge Twitter thought, and they weren’t shy about slagging him over the perceived blunder.

BUT – what we must take into account is that he probably said ‘Aland’, in reference to the Aland Islands.

A quick look at the map would confirm this theory. He’s still wrong (the island highlighted was Gotland) but he’s not THAT wrong.

Stand down. The people on University Challenge are still smarter than us.
